The world we live in is loud and noisy. Seldom, during our hectic days do we have the opportunity to hear “silence” or be “silent” The noise outside, causing these distractions, may be from the traffic moving, cars honking their horns, even dogs barking. Inside it may be from motors running, or people talking. This list could go on and on, but I think you get the point.
By deliberately being silent, you’re able to tune into your higher self. This increases self-awareness and allows you to listen and hear your thoughts. It enables you to feel and embrace your emotions. And at the same time, it quiets all the chatter in your head, bringing self-reflection while honoring these thoughts and feelings.
I am sure you‘ve all heard the phrase “silence is golden”. Well it is, and for many more reasons than you can imagine. Silence and stillness have a way of relieving stress and dissolving anxiety. It’s a way for you to restore your internal energy for both your mind as well as your body. It’s like emotional cleansing, allowing you to release that which no longer serves your well-being. It’s silence that is the bridge between your inner and outer world.
Silence is a learned practice. I use the word “practice” because it’s not a human trait you are born with. As a matter of fact, it’s quite the opposite, as you are encouraged to speak from a very early age. As with any behavior, it must be developed and practiced over and over again, even if it is only for a few moments each day. You will become disciplined in time, and it will become a part of your daily routine.
Make time each day for this “beautiful practice of silence.” Get to know the deepest part of your inner-self. Clear any distractions around you and engage yourself in the luxury of just “being”. Let this strengthen your intentions and be a part of your human development.
“Silence is a learned practice that requires far more than just not talking. Not talking is not silence; it’s just not talking.”
– Carolyn Myss
