“Attentive Silence” is an attitude as well as a state of mind that requires self-discipline as well as patience. It’s a conscious decision to be in silence, listen, and hear what the other person is saying. It also demonstrates thoughtfulness and consideration at the same time, allowing you to uncover the real message of what’s being spoken. It’s a beautiful way to communicate with grace and empathy; while, at the same time, you are making others feel that they are being heard as well as understood.
Sometimes silence may seem to be uncomfortable, but it allows the person who is speaking, time to reflect and focus on their thoughts. It also allows you the time to think, before responding. We often tend to want to interrupt or interject a comment, before the other person is finished speaking, talking past each other instead of hearing one another.
By listening silently and attentively, you encourage the other person to speak freely and express themselves openly with ease. You emotionally empower them while enhancing their self-esteem. It’s pretty powerful stuff!
Be fully present and listen with your mind and all of your senses; without distractions. Hear what’s being said beyond words. The eyes, as well as the heart, can speak without uttering a word, so listen to emotions. Make a conscious effort to be aware of body language, facial expressions and tone of voice, when listening as well as talking. This form of communication creates a genuine connection while allowing both parties to be understood.
Never underestimate the power of your silence
Listening can be more important than the words you speak
